While your goals are well intentioned, your path is likely to get you a job working in a fast food chain earning minimum wage. The FBI probably won't want you without a computer degree and special training.

What I can suggest is that you go to college and earn a degree in computer science. You'll most likely need to follow this with some special courses in computer security. You can also look for computer science courses where special forensics and penetration testing courses are offered. If you want to get a jump on college, look into what various computer science courses offer and see if you can't duplicate the course of study. This will take quite a bit of research as I can't even begin to list all the books and materials that you'd need. In a similar manner, I can't even begin to list all the books and web pages I've read over the years. If you find the right books, you may even find a reference to a FAQ I wrote several years ago in a few security related books.

As far as Linux software goes, what do you want to do with it? I suggest that you make use of Google and learn enough to answer your own question. I personally use a version of Fedora, but Ubuntu is a very popular distro. There are others that are less popular and each distro has it's own set of features and sometimes problems depending on your experience.

Do you want a small Live CD that will allow you to do repairs without booting the native operating system? Many of the major distro's are available as a limited live CD also. These are limited releases that may or may not allow a persistent environment. Some of the small Live CD's wiill load from a USB flash drive as well as a CD and are ideal for computer repair and malware removal.

Are you looking to really learn how to use and configure Linux? If so, I suggest buying a book on Linux Administration that will often come with a full release of one of the more common free Linux distro's. You can use a live CD/DVD distro, but the download times are really long. Also, to really learn Linux, you'll need to either run a dual boot system or load Linux on an older computer that maybe won't run modern stuff but will run Linux just fine.

There are also live CD's that are focused on forensics and penetration testing. These are quite simply sets of tools for doing a specific job and omit things like games and other junk.

One thing I tell every wannabe ';hacker';. Learn programming. If you actually become a hacker you'll understand. You might even learn that being a hacker isn't about breaking into computers. Being a hacker is really about learning. The media nearly always gets it wrong.

I would suggest taking your education further than that if you want to work for the FBI. Even if you learn all the stuff, you won't be in the same category as someone with a college degree and half the knowledge. I know if it sad to hear, but tis the world we live in now.

Now, Linux is something I CAN help you with! First you must decide which kernal you would like. From my own experience (I have used Mint, Kubuntu and Ubuntu) I would highly recommend Ubuntu. It is the most user friendly, but it is still customizable like all the other versions. It is about as easy to use as most versions of windows, except it is: faster, more efficient, less wasteful of your hard disk, free of cost, free of viruses and all that bad crap, and everyone knows people who run Linux are freaking awesome!

You can get Ubuntu for free by going to their website http://ubuntu.com where you will download a mirror. The same with Mint, Kubuntu and all the other free versions. Most versions of linux ARE free, but I find ubuntu to be the best.
why would you ask that on yahoo answers
