How hard would it be to get a Federal Government job if you used to smoke Maijuana?

I'll be honest... I used to smoke it pretty heavily back in my late teens/early twenties, but haven't touched it in a few years. I am currently studying Forensic Science and I love it. I would like to gain employment with the local FBI. I know that they do extensive back ground checks and poly exams... I have no criminal record and have only had one speeding ticked, if that matters. I have a great GPA and aside from working on a Forensic Science Degree, I am also minoring in Psychology... anyone have any advice??

Thanks. How hard would it be to get a Federal Government job if you used to smoke Maijuana?
The FBI, along with other federal law enforcement agencies, all have different policies regarding marijuana usage. Below are the qualifications and drug policy for the FBI. I believe that if you have used marijuana more than 15 times in your lifetime, it is also an automatic disqualification. And I would NOT recommend trying to lie on the polygraph. Also, should you make it past the beginning stages, you will get a full FBI background check. They will get all in your business. They will also go talk to anyone and everyone that you put down. They WILL find everything out.

To become an FBI Special Agent you must be a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands. You must be at least 23 years of age, but younger than 37 upon your appointment as a Special Agent. You must possess a four-year degree from a college or university accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States Secretary of Education. You must have at least three years of professional work experience. You must also possess a valid driver's license and be completely available for assignment anywhere in the FBI's jurisdiction.

Under the FBI's current Employment Drug Policy, an applicant will be found unsuitable for employment if they:

Have used any illegal drug (including anabolic steroids after February 27, 1991), other than marijuana, within the past ten years, or engaged in more than minimal experimentation in their lifetime. In making the determination about an applicant檚 suitability for FBI employment, all relevant facts, including the frequency of use, will be evaluated.

Have used marijuana/cannabis within the past three years, or have extensively used marijuana/cannabis or over a substantial period of time. In making the determination about an applicant檚 suitability for FBI employment, all relevant facts, including the recency and frequency of use, will be evaluated.

You can easily determine whether you meet the FBI's illegal drug policy by answering the following questions:

Have you used marijuana at all within the last three years?

Have you used any other illegal drug (including anabolic steroids after February 27, 1991) at all in the past 10 years?

Have you ever sold any illegal drug for profit?

Have you ever used an illegal drug (no matter how many times or how long ago) while in a law enforcement or prosecutorial position, or in a position which carries with it a high level of responsibility or public trust?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions, you are not eligible for employment with the FBI.How hard would it be to get a Federal Government job if you used to smoke Maijuana?
The FBI won't hire former pot smokers.
Not very hard at all. You just have to go through some ';drug'; test and if you pass then you pass! It also depends on WHEN you smoked the last time.

FBI is something that always has Job Openings. I don't know why they don't move abroad.
I recently heard that they do not enforce the marijuana hysteria any more because everyone in their life has experimented with it.
You will have a better chance at obtaining employment at a state level. State agencies are more leniant with prior usage of marijuana, and if you can gain experience on a state level -a federal agency will be more adept at overlooking the use if you have been gainfully employed for a period of time with a reputable regional/state agency.
You will have to wait to see if Obama becomes president to see how far in the government you can get. He admitted he smoke and GASP even inhaled LOL.
What's smoking years ago have anything to do with a new job, whether it is Federal or not? If they ask just say no, you didn't since you changed. I used to smoke back in the early seventies a little and I worked for the Fed. And I know many smoked back in the sixties and seventies and I know someone who just retired from the FBI same age as me even though I never asked him . Maybe he didn't but maybe he did in college.
I don't see how they would know unless you had a criminal record with the weed. Sounds as if you dont and are onto a great career interest. I say go for it....I would hire you. I'm sure they would do a drug screen for the job and random screens while working there....

Typically marijuana use, if it was not recent, is not a big problem. However, do not lie about it on any application. Many Federal law enforcement jobs require a polygraph at some point and if you are caught in any lies you will not be hired or you will be fired if you have already started working.
Remember prez clinton smoked it but he didnt inhale, all politicians have a backround of testing out things when they were young. ull have no problem. good luck
I wouldn't hire you. I dont think any government offical would hire a criminal (eve if you've never been arrested, you commited a crime)
Not difficult if you come clean. If not you will most likely be waterboarded.
I work for the Federal Govt in an offfice environment with approx 200 others. There may be 10-20 people here that don't smoke pot. Poly's are a breeze to get by and anyone who tells you that FBI employees/agents don't smoke pot are probably one of those 10-20 idiots who spend all their time reading the Bible while the rest of us are working with a smile on our face. Good luck.
I wouldn't worry about it as long as you can pass a drug test. You have no criminal record so you should pass all your background checks.

You can't let something like that hold you back from pursuing your dream! It sounds like you have a great life plan for yourself - go after it - you're gonna do great!

Best of luck to you!
In completing the application for the FBI they will ask about the marijuana smoking and when the last time you smoked was. Remember you will take a polygraph so you can not try to lie about it. Also in other federal positions there is a mandatory drug test that is done. I suggest if you are looking to work in the Federal Government once you graduate then you should talk to your professors about doing some intern work in one of the many government agencies. Good luck
To get into any Federal Government Job you need to have a clear drug record. If you applied for a job you will get a Polygraph test (lie detector) and a drug test (Marijuana stays in the blood for 7-10 years) so if you fail for both I.e you lied and test positive on a drug test then you're screwed. If I was you, I would be honest on the polygraph test and say that you will possibly test positive for Marijuana. You may have a chance of getting in if you're honest but I doubt it.

Good luck.
It depends on your honesty. If you admit to illegal drug use, you may not be hired.
Daily pot smoking can stay in your system for up to a year, so with that do I not think that you have to worry about taking the drug test. As far as the polygraph goes: just be honest. When they ask you while on the lie detector tell them yes, I smoked it when I was younger, but I haven't smoked it in years.....rumors that the FBI won't hire you if you ever smoked pot are not entirely true----we all tried it when we were young and dumb--the thing with the polygraph is that they can tell when you lie. You know, there is this trick-question: Did you ever steal? And people always answer with no because as adults they might not have done it, but as a child---we all tried it at least once, right? What they want to see is if you are honest---that's why they put you on the lie detector. So don't worry, apply for the job--go for it, because you have nothing to worry about....good luck
30 days out of your system . so go for it if u dont have a drug record!
